Help for Your Energy Outbursts

Positive parenting tips are rarely given in a way that makes sense. I want to share an event I witnessed yesterday.

I stopped at McDonald's, I was craving an ice-cream. Standing in front of me was a parent with three young kids. 11,10 and 7ish... the two older ones were restless and fidgeting and annoying each other. The mother turned and yelled at them with even more negative energy. The young boy moved away. I know kids do reach the 'place of no return' when they're hungry, but the mother's method of speaking to them just reflected to them that 'yelling is the norm' in this family.

Later, the three found a table and the young one stood by the counter. I smiled and said, "You don't want to be around that energy right now, do you?" He knew exactly what I was saying. I smiled and said, "You must have a great outlet for your energy. Do you play sports?" He grinned back a huge, "YEAH." I said, "I bet you're really good." Another huge grin.

Then I asked if his brother played sports too. "No" he replied. I said, "I bet he would love wrestling, or karate, or something like that." He said, "He used to play it once and liked it."I whispered, "You should mention to your mom that maybe he's needs to go back and do something he loves so he gets to let out his bottled up energy."

I also said, "Your brother looks like a great kid to me."I noticed the mother looking at me. As I left, I gave her the thumbs up, like she has a great kid, the one I got a chance to talk with.

She smiled back, and I could see how her energy changed. I could have told her to be nice to her kids, but that adds fuel to the fire. Always find what brings peace to families who are out of balance with each other.
